My Grade 9 Individuals and Societies class is doing a unit on Migration, so a trip to the Overseas Chinese History Museum of China fit perfectly into the topics we've been studying. The museum isn't large compared to a national museum, but packs a lot in. It contains many interesting displays and loads of information about the achievements of overseas Chinese (Chinese migrants to other countries). The museum goes into detail about the reasons for migrations, the struggles faced by the people, and many stories of their success. There is also a large section on the contributions of overseas Chinese to the development and defence of China throughout various stages of China's history. One of the main themes was the "3 knives" of the overseas migrants - the barber, the tailor, and the chef - being the mainstay of many Chinatowns the world over. The students enjoyed the museum and found it a good opportunity to see examples of the types of things we have been investigating in our unit.
