Recently spent a week in Dalian on our school's "Week Without Walls" program. Such an engaging city, full of international history, with a modern vibe, and a relaxed sea-side atmosphere. Had a chance to take in several museums while there, including the Dalian Modern History Museum; the museum that was a former Russian and then Japanese prison; and a 1980s-era Chinese submarine. The modern history museum is well done, with interactive displays, a good layout, and plenty of information - the only downside is that there are no English translations. Students particularly liked the former prison, as they learned a lot, though it was a rather sombre experience, being the site of so many atrocities. We enjoyed our time by the seaside, doing a scavenger hunt throughout the old town, doing wood carving, an old Russian fort, and LOTS of hiking (oh and LOTS of eating as well!!). That's me holding a pigeon for some reason. Special shout out to The Hutong for organizing such a fantastic trip! For a student of history, Dalian is a great place to see how changes have taken place over time and an example of the resilience of people.
